Pimax 8K Impression

UPDATED

Headstrap:
Going to replace it sooner rather than later, far too unforgiving for comfort/adjust-ability.
When HMD is not vice gripped to my head, the visual annoyances occur. (See below)

Face Cushion:
Could use slightly thicker cushion for glasses wearers.

IPD Dial:
No issues for my 64 range.
Adjustments between 60-72.

Pimax 4K - 0-5.0 - Must use software and even then, acceptability may not occur.
Pimax 8K - 8.0
Oculus Rift CV1 - 8.0

It’s really good.

Pimax 4K - 0 - There is no mic.

It’s very much visible on colors that are not dark.

Pimax 4K - 7.5
Pimax 8K - 6.0
Oculus Rift CV1 - 4.5

The extreme Super-sampling is not pratical, wanted to see the visuals.
Nothing became slide-showy though.

Desktop Text Clarity:

Virtual Desktop
SteamVR Beta Super-sampling 500%
Super-sampling 3.0 and the virtual screen(s) size with >130.
Was very much possible to curve screens around me & have it looking acceptable.
The Pimax 4K could use “90” screen size and still be comfortable.

Pimax 4K - PiTool 1.0.1.90 - 7.5
Pimax 4K - Piplay 1.1.92 - 7.8
Pimax 8K - PiTool 1.0.1.90 - 6.4

Big Screen Beta
SteamVR Beta Super-sampling 500%
Again, from distance, desktop text looked terrible on the static big screens, preferred environments where the screen(s) could be adjusted.
Anti-aliasing did not appear to make any difference on the text.

The “Infamous” VRMark Pro. Blue Room Custom Experience:
SteamVR Beta Super-sampling OFF

This is where the Pimax 4K really shows it’s strength.
The left & right digital screen? can be read easily without desire to get closer from default position,
The Pimax 8K can not be read as easily from default position.
The Oculus Rift CV1 looks terrible from default position.

Dedicated VR Video Players:
Reserved.

Distance View:
Reserved

Colors:
The colors do not stand out, they’re nowhere near an OLED but quite expected.

Pimax 4K - 5.0
Pimax 8K - 5.0
Oculus Rift CV1 - 8.0

Brightness:
It’s not bad but it’s also not great, could use at least 2 more levels without washing the colors out any further.

Pimax 4K - 5.0 (Gamma Ray 11 when shutter glass has been removed)
Pimax 8K - 5.5
Oculus Rift CV1 - 5.5

Visual Annoyance:
Too much clarity has been lost. - This remains true without large amounts of Super-sampling to keep it at bay.
The environment really does move with me in the far peripheral when turning head and it’s hard to ignore/get use to. (See Headstrap)
This becomes more and more pronounced when increasing FOV. (See Headstrap)
Rainbow effect can make an appearance especially with white backgrounds.

Pimax 4K - PiTool 1.0.1.90 - 6.0
Pimax 4K - Piplay 1.1.92 - 6.5
Pimax 8K - 7.0
Oculus Rift CV1 - 4.5

Tracking:
No issues.

Pimax 4K - 0-6.0 - Must utilize third party workarounds.
Pimax 8K - 8.5
Oculus Rift CV1 - 7.5

Without Basestations:
There is drifting, but it’s not substantial.

Pimax 4K - PiTool 1.0.1.90 - 4.5
Pimax 4K - Piplay 1.1.92 - 4.0
Pimax 8K - PiTool 1.0.1.90 - 6.8

Observed:
My setup uses the Vive Link Box for Bluetooth connection and Power Management works.
SteamVR wakes and sleeps the basestations.

Conclusion:
Pimax 8K vs Pimax 4K:

Headstrap without Headphones
Need Thicker Face Cushion to avoid glasses (even some eyelashes) collision with lenses
Huge Lenses (Sweetspot)
Worse Clarity
Much Better FOV
Increased Brightness
Better Colors
Vive Tracking Support (Standard)

Splurging on new components has become inevitable now…
Would like to see how Pimax handles the 8K X.

#2

Really nice review with both Pimax 4k and CV1 comparison, thanks!

#3

good review, interesting that some people think the soft strap is fine, others don’t like it, I guess it depends how long you wear it for?

#4

Also the distorsions:

“The environment really does move with me in the far peripheral when turning head and it’s hard to ignore/get use to.”
(MRTV said something about “the world moving with you” with the pimax 8k maybe is that what is happening to you and maybe MRTV got it fixed somehow throught a profile)

Some people say distortions are not a game breaker others can not take them…

#5

Having just returned from the NY Backer Meetup… these two items you listed are exactly my top two items… However, with regards to the face cushion… I have 20/20 vision but a 60-61 IPD… and I really need a thicker cushion even though I don’t wear glasses. The thin cushion of the HMD’s made it a bit uncomfortable to me.

#6

Yeah, I’d say the cushion could be more comfortable. I noticed that the first time I put the 8K on.

The strap is perfectly fine for me. No issues at all.

#7

The strap while not my preference is a great improvement over the p4k strap.

#8

To me looks like you are experiencing every trouble 0.84 have, or at least gave me.
Just rebooting the PC give me different results, fuzzy text, “world moving stuff”, just with settings, but when it work well (and I managed to make it done) its not that bad compared to the 4k.

#9

It was the fit.

Looking forward to the Headstrap with headphones to counter the weight.

#10

See my poor man’s headstrap easy to make & works better.
