That’s because Apple has dropped OpenGL support. Graphics needs to use Apple’s proprietary Metal API. That makes a game much harder to port to the platform.

One thing I question - why are they not using HDMI 2.1 which has higher bandwidth if DP1.4 is not enough? I will not be happy if the image ends up being chroma 4:2:0 like the 144hz monitors today. Id rather wait for another year for them to DELAY the HMD just for HDMI 2.1.
Simple; even a GeForce 2080 series card only supports HDMI 2.0b. The higher bandwidth of the HDMI 2.1 specification is what we term a “pipe dream”; it’s planned, not produced. Equally, the ANX7678 bridge is only HDMI 2.0. Pimax are using the most recent production components.
Also, Pimax elected to use DSC, which is far better than chroma subsampling. Proper monitors don’t do that either; it’s a TV thing. Per wikipedia, DSC is standard in DisplayPort 1.4, but not in HDMI until 2.1 (whenever that makes it to market).

Im not sure about the reason, but I know they are fully aware of the HDMI 2.1 standard, so there must be a good reason they went for DisplayPort.
As for the chroma subsampling, Im not sure if 4:2:0 will be used. It could as well be 4:2:2 if the bandwidth is enough. But tbh I havent got any information regarding this yet
We need 4:4:4 in the 8k-X . Anything less will cripple text clarity.
I have a 144hz “Gamer” monitor and iam sure it is running with SC 4:4:4.
They’re claiming a higher bandwidth transmission through HDMI 2.1 than Thunderbolt 3. So they’ll have lengths limited by the same physics. But precisely what the result is we won’t know until source, cable and sink have been produced to be verified. Basically things have to move to fiber sooner or later, but VR’s motion demands make that trickier.
There should be no need to do chroma subsampling because of the DSC. Doing any chroma subsampling guarantees a lower resolution just like dropping subpixels; DSC instead can choose to prioritise detail and operate in available bitrate, typically avoiding any visual loss. Chroma subsampling was useful for compatible broadcast in the 1950s.
“4:4:4” is similarly industry jargon for full colour (which happens to be arbitrarily chosen for comparison only, like a 16:10 aspect ratio). It’s technically equivalent to 1:1.

It’s doable; while VR involves motion, the main requirement for the fiber is that it not bend too sharply. Any bending does involve signal alteration, but a good receiver can probably tune its equalizer for that in real time. So you need a cable that protects the fiber from kinks and crushing. We also need power and USB (that’s why the Vive cable is known as 3-in-1). So what we’re talking about is essentially a VirtualLink cable with optical DP and mechanical shielding designed for motion, which may well resemble a coiled air line. It would be nice if headsets could standardise on something like SFP transceivers, but for now I’d tolerate e.g. a link box you could attach to your belt and a headset specific short cable (which is often already available for VR backpack computers). Incidentally, a VirtualLink adapter for the Pimax 5K+ family should be simple; it would basically only need to present the power demands.
If they could just leap ahead five to ten years, we could do without all these cable complications and simply do wireless at any res!
If bandwidth is such a big deal, why not literally just let us use our own DP1.4 cable? Some of us who got the $$$, we will buy the fiber optic DP 1.4 cables and the overclock the HMD to 90Hz, where as people who don’t want to spend any more $$$, they will be left with 80Hz. If you use fiber optic, you could literally overclock a 4K 144Hz monitor to like 165Hz and get the full 4:4:4 colors. Warning: The fiber optic cable starts at $270 for just 2 meters. Id pay $1000 for fiber optic, and then $1500 for this headset and then another $1500 for a 2080Ti and then another $2000 for the rest of the PC including watercooling… and then I’ve spend about $10 000 for the whole fun. See - it’s worth it!
wireless can be done today, the problem is you could probably not afford it.
there are tons of fantastic devices who never pass the marketing level because silly reasons.
Let’s not forget countries also have wireless transmission regulations/restrictions that vary by regions.

Absolutely not. I would not sacrifice a single degree of FOV. I would rather go back to CV1 resolution than accept anything narrower than ‘Large’ FOV.
I’m not sure of the accuracy, but I’ve seen some discussions which concluded that standard fiber optic cable isn’t durable enough for VR applications. (Too much flexing, twisting, pulling, crimping, etc. damages the cable.) You’d probably need heavy-duty FO cable and still need to exercise caution.
