Upscaling test pattern

the 1080p version is here;

in the test pattern, in the bottom middle, there is circles inside the pattern that become visible when you use a combination of a upscaler, a sharpener, and a monitor color calibration.

upscaler

in oculus rift program virtual desktop, i set the super sampling to 2.3, and msaa to 2x.

sharpener

i have my gtx 1060 set to 90 sharpener in the “adjust video settings”, edge enhancement, use the nvidia setting = +90, too high and the result is image loss which is the opposite of edge enhancement. for outside vr i set it to 47.

or

in mpc hc, view, options, shaders, drop down list choose “sharpen complex” and then click “add to post processing, click apply, ok.” setting the nvidia edge enhancement seems to be ineffective for mpc hc in virtual desktop.

color calibration

i found that adjusting the brightness, contrast, saturation, lets me see the bottom middle test pattern circles.

here is how to calibrate the colors for your monitor;

to calibrate my colors i use a website and my nvidia color slider in “adjust desktop settings” in the nvidia gui.

here’s my method.

here’s my method.

http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/all_tests.php

first set the brightness and contrast for all three rgb using the Quick contrast test

set both brightness and contrast to the same value.
go up in value so the last and second last white square blend together.

second set the gamma for all three rgb colors using the Response-time test so the far left square in a is seen faintly flickering,
the slightest is faint flicker but still visible without imagination.

third go back to the Quick contrast test and set the individual red, green blue contrast and brightness.
you set the contrast and brightness to the same value for the color your setting.
you want the lowest color in the black to be the same intensity for the red green blue and still visible.
that means you lower the red and green to match the intensity of the blue in the number 1 square, starting with red.

fourth you set the digital vibrance/saturation using the Response-time test,
so the far left square in h shows its inner box which is only the top of the inner box outline of a line
, and the top row A far left box and (A -120) box and (A 120) box show their inner boxes.

fifth after all this the using the Quick contrast test last and second last white square dont blend together.

sixth using the black level test, set the rgb gamma to the same value, and increase the gamma so the black boxes are visible for the bottom rows.
the last two color bars in the black and white bar should still be visible in the Quick contrast test.

seventh, go back to the Quick contrast test and set the individual red, green blue contrast and brightness.
you set the contrast and brightness to the same value for the color your setting.
you want the lowest color in the black to be the same intensity for the red green blue and still visible.
the red and green and blue match the intensity of the number 1 square. when you lower one color by one step you also lower the other two colors by one step, to keep the color calibration.

eighth using the Quick contrast test, lower the digital vibrance/saturation to make the color in the 1 box even darker,
keep lowering it until the color in the blue 1 box is easy to distinguish from the 0 box.

ninth, you set the hue using the Quick contrast test, the yellow 1 row above the black and white bar, and purple 2 rows above the black and white row.
raise the value of the hue until the purple and yellow lose one color bar from being too bright then lower the hue to regain the lost color bar.
maybe it will take 1 or 2 but not more than that.

red
brightness 45
contrast 45
gamma 1.15

green
brightness 42
contrast 42
gamma 1.15

blue
brightness 50
contrast 50
gamma 1.15

digital vibrance 58
hue 1

for vr fisheye, I used my eye only on the music video “[MV] OH MY GIRL(오마이걸) _ Coloring Book(컬러링북)” to set the brightness and contrast to the same value and still see the white difference in the beginning of the video.

for the saturation I used what looked best to me over a few music videos and looking at their faces.

adjust video color setting tab
brightness 53
contrast 53
hue 179
saturation 51

adjust video image settings tab
edge enhancement for desktop 47, for vr fisheye 90

summary

if you have a poor upscaler, the test pattern wont show the circles in the bottom middle test pattern, and the diagonal lines on the middle right in the test pattern either wont be visible, or the spaces between the lines wont be distinguishable.

to remedy this follow my guide above. you can use this test pattern on any monitor that has access to playing mp4 files. so try the file on your pc onyour monitor it doesnt need to be the pimax, windows or linux or mac your choice. even a phone.

Quality of upscaler on 8K?

this is probably best pushed to @SweViver @mixedrealityTV and @VoodooDE

however, here is virustotal analysis of link

thanks for that i erased the link, i put the direct download link up instead, its hosted at oculusvr website

forgive suspicion, but brand new account, had to scan. flag on a scan, had to note it and let people decide to proceed.

#5

yeah i didnt scan the website when i uploaded to it a few days ago i should have, sorry. the files clean though.

I updated my color calibration method in the first post.

i read about the pimax 8k vs 5k, upscaling is worse on the 8k.

i tested on my rift how to make the resolution show the circles in the bottom middle of the test pattern.
one of the things i found was the larger super sampling of 3 gave worse resolution than 2.3.

so if the size of the 8k is special, then you need to set the upscaler super sampling custom for that 8k.

the videos reviewing pimax 8k and 5k seem to suggest that setting the super sampling the highest the machine can run will give the best resolution results, this is not true.

to set the super sampling, pause the test pattern as you increment the super sampling up and see where the gains start to make the picture worse. youll need to set the 8k to a different ss than the 5k.

also use a lower msaa anti aliasing, here again the highest isnt the best for resolution.

doing this will lower the super sampling, make the code run faster, and make the picture more detailed.

im writing this because there is a belief in the reviewers on youtube that more ss or aa is always better for resolution and picture beautiy, like make up more is not always better.

My test shows both 8K and 5K+ won’t increase clarity above PiTool 1.75/SteamVR SS 40% : 5K+ or 8K? My test of M2 through pictures of Aerofly FS2, Project Cars, and Virtual Desktop (Update with pics of extreme setting on floor 28)

#9

i would like to clarify, i tested my super sampling in the rift program “virtual desktop”, video playe,r fish-eye, at 60.

using this i can set the virtual desktop ss tenths. also the desktop color has no impact on the results. you can adjust the sharpness and color of the picture in fish-eye using;

  • nvidia “adjust video settings”, edge enhancement
  • nvidia adjust video color setting

because of this, you can adjust these nvidia settings to see if they make the picture better so you can see the circles in the bottom middle of the picture and the diagonal lines on the right of the test pattern.

if you can make the picture better, then you can also set the pimax software to do the change and that would adjust the speed of the pimax 8k 5k.
